The medieval city of Esslingen.

Besides vineyards and forests, the former free imperial city of Esslingen is fascinating with a beautiful medieval Old Town and many attractions. Esslingen was the first and greatest industrial city in the former Kingdom of Württemberg. Very remarkable is the oldest half-timbered house line in Germany.

The first mention of Esslingen was in 777. The Franconian abbot Fulrad of St. Denis near Paris mentioned the settlement in his will. Around 800 Esslingen became a market town. In 1229 Esslingen received the city rights. In this period the still extant Neckar bridge was built. Esslingen became a major centre for trade and also export the highly regarded wines from the region.
Today ninety-three thousand inhabitants are living in the town. In Esslingen centuries of history are waiting to be discovered.
