The significant Mannheim Palace.

The cityscape of Mannheim is significantly characterised by the castle. This was once the political, administrative and cultural centre of the Palatinate capital and royal residential city. Especially under the reign of Elector Carl Theodor, the Mannheim Palace drew numerous personalities from the political and cultural realms.

Interest in the castle decreased with the increasing industrialisation of the city. After the Second World War only a pile of rubble remained of the gigantic construction which had boasted more than 2,000 windows. The reconstruction of the magnificent building began in 1947. The opening of the Castle Museum heralded the return of this architectural masterpiece to public attention.
